Profiles and Testimonials: Mike McKown

Mike McKown - Pipe & Precast Technical Specialist

Mike McKown has a history similar to that of Bill Maize. He began his career in the plant as an operations manager for CSR Hydro Conduit; He was responsible for their Pipe and Precast production in Delaware, Ohio. Mike took his production experience and enhanced his technical knowledge by entering the admixture business in 1997.

Mike quickly became one of the industries experts in SCC (Self Consolidating Concrete) field technology. Creating SCC in laboratory conditions is one thing, but to be able to produce it in the field requires the ability to make proper adjustments on the fly. Mike's reputation grew through his success with architectural precast panels that required large aggregates, color, and various texture specifications; all which were done with SCC. Mike's specialty was to design mixes that did not require the use of a viscosity modifier. Recently Mike has been involved with designing concrete for precast operations that will yield compressive strengths in excess of 7000 psi in 16 hours.

Prior to his employment with Premiere, Mike was put in charge of developing and monitoring a mix for use on the largest cast in place SCC project in the Midwest. Mike worked closely with the concrete supplier and the contractor, Barton Malow Concrete, to address the special requirements of the job, which included form design to scheduling. SCC concrete was selected because of the heavy congestion of reinforcing steel. However, once the process began Barton Malow Concrete began to see a bigger advantage to SCC, that of labor and time savings.

"I have personally been working with Doug Wittler and Mike McKown for 4 years. Their expertise in the most current concrete technologies has repeatedly helped me to provide my clients and employees with the most up-to-date concrete construction practices. They continually make themselves readily available to support all of our concrete technology needs.

Mike McKown has provided support to my teams both in the field and in the office. His experience in the industry is utilized to provide training and support to our project teams. Mike's abilities truly become apparent during the construction phase. His hands on support in the field and in the batch plant help to ensure the projects he is involved with move forward in an efficient manner. I have been most impressed by the effort that he exerts to insure that a quality product is consistently produced for a project. Having Mike on my jobsite adds a dedicated concrete consultant to my project team.

The efforts of Doug, Mike, and the rest of the Premiere team were a major influence on our decision to use Self Consolidating Concrete on one of our current projects. The structural concrete "stacking tube"is congested with embedded frames and reinforcing steel. We debated constructing the structure with conventional concrete mixes and consolidation methods. In the end, the past successes with Doug and Mike prompted us to confidently decide to use the SCC mix in the construction of this structure."
